Uswag is a term used in various regions that means “progress.” This special part of the brand Uswag Arejano Producers Cooperative’s name was not used merely to provide local color—uswag is the marching order and North Star for the cultural collective in Leyte.
Uswag Arejano Producers Cooperative is the brainchild of Congresswoman Anna Veloso-Tuazon from the 3rd District of Leyte, who operated with the assumption—and assertion—that artisan weavers are integral to cultural heritage across regions in the Philippines, not just Leyte. The project is also enlivened by Cong. Veloso-Tuazon’s passions, both for locally made products and for keeping the wisdom from culture-makers and bearers alive.
With her team and with cultural agencies, they gathered artisan weavers within Leyte to foster an environment that fosters both livelihood and knowledge-sharing among the artisan weavers. The collective bigger goal for Uswag is for uswag to also impact other sectors and stakeholders, creating an inclusive melting pot for everyone’s enrichment.
